Privacy policy

The short version: no accounts, no advertising trackers, and no cookies unless you sign in to the app preview. We count visits with Ahrefs Web Analytics, which doesn't use cookies or store IP addresses. We only receive personal details if you send us a message or join the launch list.

Who we are

This policy covers guitarnotation.com, including the browser demo at /player and /editor. For anything about this policy or your data, email info@guitarnotation.com.

What our server records

Like almost every website, our web server logs each request it receives: your IP address, the date and time, the page you asked for, the page that linked you to us, and your browser and device type. We use these logs only to keep the site running and secure, for example to fix errors and block abuse. They are deleted automatically after about ten days.

Visitor statistics

To see which pages people read and how they find us, every page loads Ahrefs Web Analytics from analytics.ahrefs.com. When you open a page, it sends Ahrefs the page's address and title, the page that linked you to us, your browser's language and your screen size. It also reports the address of each link you click and each form you send, but never what you type into a form.

Like any request, these reach Ahrefs with your IP address and browser type. Ahrefs uses them to work out your country and city and to make a visitor ID that changes every day, then discards the IP address without storing it. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. What we see are counts, such as visitors to a page or from a country, not individual visitors. Ahrefs handles this data under its own privacy policy.

If you'd rather not be counted, a content blocker that blocks analytics.ahrefs.com stops it, and the site works just the same.

The browser demo

The player and editor run entirely in your browser. The notes you enter aren't sent to us or stored anywhere, and they're gone when you reload or leave the page. Sound is generated in your browser.

The app preview at /app works the same way. Songs you open in it are read by your browser and never uploaded, and nothing you do in it is sent to us; the only things it loads from our server are the app itself and its instrument sounds.

Support messages

When you send a message through our support form, we receive your name, your email address, the topic you chose and your message, along with your IP address and the time you sent it. Our server saves a copy and emails it to our inbox at info@guitarnotation.com, which is hosted by our email provider, Purelymail. If you email us directly, we receive whatever your email contains.

We use these details only to read and answer your message, and the IP address only to stop spam and abuse of the form. We don't add you to any mailing list. We keep messages while we may need them to follow up; ask us and we'll delete yours.

The launch list

If you leave your email to hear when guitarnotation goes on sale, we store that address and the time you signed up. We use it only to email you when the app is on sale, and we don't share it with anyone. To come off the list, email info@guitarnotation.com and we'll delete your address.

Cookies and tracking

We set one cookie, and only if you sign in to the password-protected app preview at /app: it keeps you signed in for 30 days and holds nothing but an expiry time and a signature, with nothing about you. Signing out, or changing the preview's password, ends it.

Otherwise we don't set cookies or keep anything in your browser's storage, and we use no advertising or social media trackers. The only analytics we use is Ahrefs Web Analytics, described above, which sets no cookies either. If that changes, we'll update this page first and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent.

Payments

This site doesn't take payments or store payment details. If that changes, we'll update this policy before it does.

Other services we use

The site runs on a server provided by a hosting company, our email is handled by Purelymail, and our visitor statistics by Ahrefs. Apart from the Ahrefs analytics script, everything on our pages, fonts included, comes from our own server, so visiting the site doesn't contact Google or any other third party.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing info@guitarnotation.com or choosing “Privacy or data request” on the support form. If you're in the EU or UK and unhappy with our answer, you can also complain to your data protection authority.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
